Sanger-Harris Building, Department store building in Downtown Dallas, United States
The Sanger-Harris Building is a multi-story structure from the 1960s distinguished by white marble columns and modern architectural lines throughout its design. Located at the intersection of Pacific Avenue and Akard Street, it continues to display the original architectural features that defined its character.
The building opened in 1965 as the main store for Sanger-Harris, created through the merger of two long-standing Dallas retailers, Sanger Brothers and A. Harris & Co. This combination of two established stores formed the foundation for a major retail center in downtown Dallas.
The building served as a social hub for shoppers across Dallas for many years, and its architectural style helped define the character of the downtown area. Today it stands as a testament to how commercial districts transform and reinvent their purposes.
The building is easily accessible from street level and its structural features make it straightforward to walk around and observe. Visitors should plan to spend time examining the facade and marble details from the surrounding streets.
The building featured the largest single-surface glass mosaic art installation in the United States, spanning three sides of the structure. This remarkable artistic feature made it a visual landmark and demonstrated an innovative approach to architectural decoration.
