San Juan de la Maguana is a municipality in San Juan Province located in a fertile valley at roughly 415 meters elevation. The town sits northwest of Santo Domingo, near the Yaque del Sur River, and is surrounded by farmland.
Spanish explorer Diego Velázquez founded the settlement in 1508 on the site of the former Taíno capital under Chief Caonabo's rule. The place later became an important center in the region's colonial development.
