The InterContinental Miami is a 35-story tower in downtown Miami rising above Biscayne Bay with 641 rooms throughout its floors. The property contains two restaurants, a wellness center, and over 100,000 square feet of meeting space designed for various needs.
Designed by architect Pietro Belluschi in 1982, the InterContinental Miami opened in 1983 as the Pavilion Hotel, part of developer Theodore Gould's Miami Centre waterfront project. Foreclosure followed in 1985, and InterContinental took over management under a long-term contract the next year, renaming it. A $30 million renovation ran from 2009 to 2012, adding an LED "digital canvas" on the facade.
Since the 1980s the hotel has anchored Bayfront Park's New Year's Eve countdown, when a neon cartoon orange in sunglasses, the "Big Orange" made by local signmaker Steve "Mr. Neon" Carpenter, is raised up the side of the tower toward midnight. The 2020 edition was cancelled and the 2021–22 and 2022–23 events used a projected digital orange instead.
The hotel sits within walking distance of the Miami Convention Center and connects easily to downtown business districts and major transit points. Visitors will find convenient access to transportation options and the surrounding commercial areas.
