William Macy and John Diamond made the first recorded ascent in July 1852 while surveying for construction of the Free Emigrant Road. Their climb was part of the early exploration efforts of the region.
The Diamond Peak Wilderness extends across 52,611 acres, supporting Roosevelt elk, black-tailed deer, red squirrels, and multiple bird species within its diverse forest ecosystems.
Visitors can reach the mountain via Rockpile and Summit Lake trailheads, with routes requiring several hours of hiking depending on conditions. The trails offer varying difficulty levels and may be challenging during certain weather periods.
The mountain bears visible traces of glacial erosion with distinct cirques and moraines showing the extent of past ice movements. These glacial features remain clearly visible in the landscape today.
