Crooked River, River in Central Oregon, US
The Crooked River is a river in central Oregon that winds through deep basalt canyons and pine forests. The waterway flows from southeastern Crook County to Lake Billy Chinook, cutting through dramatic rock formations.
The river received federal protection in 1988 when Congress designated multiple segments as National Wild and Scenic Rivers. This designation preserved several sections of the waterway from development.
The river system contains three segments including the North Fork, Chimney Rock, and Lower Crooked River, each offering different recreational experiences.
The river is accessible along State Highway 27, which runs alongside the water and leads to hiking trails and camping areas. Visitors can find fishing spots and water recreation opportunities throughout the valley.
One section of the river stretches for several kilometers as a protected wilderness where visitors can experience complete solitude away from developed areas. This remote zone offers nature lovers a rare chance to be far from civilization.
