Newberry Volcano, Shield volcano in Deschutes County, Oregon
Newberry Volcano extends across 1,200 square miles, featuring a caldera that spans 5 miles in diameter and contains two lakes, Paulina Lake and East Lake.
The volcano began its formation 600,000 years ago, with the most recent eruption occurring in 690 AD, leaving lasting geological evidence of its active past.
Native American tribes maintained connections to this land for over 10,000 years, using the area's resources for sustenance and incorporating it into their traditions.
Visitors can access numerous trails, campgrounds, and geological sites throughout the 54,000-acre monument, including the extensive Lava River Cave system.
With more than 400 volcanic vents scattered across its surface, this volcano contains the highest concentration of volcanic features in the contiguous United States.
