Happy Bottom Riding Club, Dude ranch and bar near Edwards Air Force Base, California.
The Happy Bottom Riding Club was a sprawling desert property that combined lodging, a restaurant, a dance hall, a swimming pool, a rodeo arena, and an airstrip across roughly 360 acres. The facility was designed to cater to horseback riding activities and aerial arrivals.
Florence 'Pancho' Barnes founded the property in 1935 as a social hub for test pilots and Hollywood figures, ceasing operations by 1953. Its creation represented a turning point locally by linking aviation innovation with entertainment culture.
The club celebrated aviation achievements with special dinners honoring test pilots and their crews. Visitors came together at the bar and dance hall to share stories from their daring flights.
Visitors could arrive by aircraft using the on-site airstrip or drive by car to enjoy horseback riding and swimming. Proximity to Edwards Air Force Base made the property particularly accessible to pilot arrivals.
The swimming pool featured a sloped ramp that supposedly allowed the owner to ride her horse directly into the water. This unusual design reflected the founder's unconventional personality and approach to entertaining her guests.
