Mojave Desert, Desert region in San Bernardino County, US.

The Mojave Desert stretches across four states and features dry lake beds, sand dunes, and rock formations in shades of red and ochre. Vegetation consists mainly of low shrubs, cacti, and scattered trees adapted to extreme dryness.

Indigenous peoples lived here for thousands of years and developed techniques to find water and gather food in the harsh landscape. In the 19th century, European settlers began laying trade routes and later railroad lines through the area.

Local communities consider the desert sacred ground, and visitors can see rock art and stone formations that have been used for ceremonies for centuries. Hikers and campers respect these sites by staying on marked paths and leaving everything untouched.

Bring large quantities of water, wear long-sleeved clothing and a hat, and start hikes early in the morning to avoid midday heat. A vehicle with high clearance and a GPS device are useful for remote areas, as many roads are unpaved.

In certain spots you can find abandoned mines and ghost towns from the gold rush era that remain accessible to explore. During winter months, snow can fall at night even when daytime temperatures are mild.
