Karuo culture

The Karuo archaeological site extends across 10,000 square meters at an elevation of 3,100 meters in Tibet, containing remains of ancient settlements and artifacts.

Excavations conducted between 1978 and 1979 uncovered more than 7,000 artifacts, including stone tools, pottery fragments, and bone objects from the Neolithic period.

The settlement patterns at Karuo evolved from round semi-subterranean structures to rectangular subterranean houses, indicating changes in permanent habitation practices.

The location provides researchers access to 34 preserved house foundations, stone altars, and road networks that demonstrate advanced architectural capabilities.

Karuo represents the earliest evidence of agriculture on the Tibetan Plateau, with foxtail millet cultivation dating back to approximately 3000 BCE.
