Colorado National Guard Armory, Military facility in Golden, United States.
The Colorado National Guard Armory is a military building in Golden constructed with cobblestones gathered from Clear Creek and Golden Gate Canyon, featuring a 65-foot observation tower. Today different levels house student housing and Cafe 13, while the structure still contains training rooms, weapons storage areas, and administrative offices.
The cornerstone was laid on June 14, 1913, to house Company A Engineers with many members from the Colorado School of Mines. This construction marked an important moment for military infrastructure in Golden.
The building served the community as a gathering place, housing Golden's post office and hosting social events that brought residents together. Its role shifted from military use to supporting local life and activities that defined the town's social fabric.
The building spans multiple levels with different uses, so visitors should plan which areas they want to explore. Visiting at different times of day can reveal various activities, especially when Cafe 13 is open.
The building holds the record as the largest cobblestone structure in the United States and was built using about 3330 wagonloads of stone. This exceptional construction makes it a remarkable example of local building materials and craftsmanship from that era.
