Sakhir

Sakhir is a desert in the southern part of Bahrain, covered with sand and limestone rock formations. The landscape has sparse plant life and stretches across wide open terrain typical of Middle Eastern deserts.

The region remained a natural desert landscape for centuries until 2004, when the Bahrain International Circuit was built there. This racing facility brought the area into international attention.

The Tree of Life stands alone in the sand, showing how nature persists in such harsh conditions. Local people see this solitary tree as a meaningful symbol of resilience.

Summer temperatures can exceed 46°C (115°F), so bring plenty of water and strong sun protection when visiting. Plan visits for cooler times of day to stay comfortable in the heat.

The campus of the University of Bahrain sits in the middle of this landscape, with students studying surrounded by sand dunes and modern buildings. This blend of education and desert setting creates an unusual learning environment.
