The province encompasses 2,028 islands scattered across the South China Sea between Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula, and Borneo, with Tanjung Pinang as its capital.
The Riau Islands region belonged to the Buddhist Srivijaya empire from the 7th through 13th century before becoming part of the Johor Sultanate and Dutch colonial territories.
The province combines Malay, Chinese, and Indigenous traditions, with Islam practiced by three-quarters of the population alongside Buddhist and Christian communities.
