North Maluku

North Maluku encompasses nearly 400 islands spread across the Molucca Sea, with Halmahera serving as the largest landmass at 17,780 square kilometers.

The region was the center of four powerful Islamic sultanates - Bacan, Jailolo, Tidore, and Ternate - which controlled the spice trade routes until Dutch colonization.

The province maintains a rich multicultural identity with ethnic groups including Galela, Ternate, Makian, Tobelo, and Sula, each preserving their distinct traditions.

Transportation between islands operates through regular ocean services, with Ternate functioning as the main hub connecting various parts of the province.

The waters surrounding North Maluku reach depths of 4,800 meters near Bacan Island, while active volcanoes like Gamalama rise 1,715 meters above sea level.
