Lankaran District, Administrative district in southeastern Azerbaijan.
Lankaran District is an administrative region in southeastern Azerbaijan that spans coastal zones, mountainous terrain, and fertile plains. It borders Astara, Lerik, Masally, and Neftchala districts along the Caspian Sea coast.
The district transformed from the center of the Talysch Khanate after the 1813 Treaty of Gulistan, becoming part of the Russian Empire. The Treaty of Turkmenchay further solidified this shift in the region's political landscape.
The Lankaran History and Ethnography Museum houses more than 6500 pieces reflecting regional traditions through archaeological finds, handcrafted items, and documents. The collection reveals how local people have lived and created art over generations.
The district has 51 kindergartens, 81 educational institutions, and a state university providing learning opportunities across all levels. Specialized schools for music and arts education complete the educational offerings in the region.
The district contains Hirkan National Park, home to the Parrotia persica tree, which historically was prized for its slow-burning properties as fuel. This characteristic made the species valuable to people in the region for generations.
