Zhenru Temple, Buddhist temple in Putuo District, Shanghai, China
The Mahavira Hall of Zhenru Temple contains a large jade statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, surrounded by traditional Chinese architectural elements and detailed carvings.
Founded during the Song Dynasty and relocated in 1320, Zhenru Temple endured multiple transformations, including extensive damage during the Taiping Rebellion of 1860.
The temple name Zhenru translates to 'thusness' or 'reality as it is', reflecting fundamental Buddhist principles from the Vijnaptimatratasiddhi-sastra philosophical text.
The temple complex offers Buddhist meditation sessions, educational programs about religious practices, and regular ceremonies throughout the calendar year.
After serving as an ancient architecture exhibition hall in 1979, the temple returned to regular religious activities in 1991 with additional jade statues from Singapore.
