Chongming Island is located at the Yangtze River mouth near Shanghai and covers approximately 1,267 sq km (490 sq mi). The terrain is flat with rich soil, dense forests, and extensive agricultural areas that define its landscape.
The island formed in the 7th century from three sandbars and grew gradually through river deposits. In the early 10th century, a military garrison was established to protect the region from raids.
The Chongming Academy preserves Confucian traditions through displays of historical artifacts and photographs, with a Confucius statue in the Hall of Great Achievement. Visitors can see how these teachings remain central to local education and daily life on the island.
The island is reached by car through the Yangtze tunnel or by regular ferries from Nanmen Port. Visitors should expect flat terrain and numerous paths for exploring nature and villages throughout the area.
The Dong Tan Protected Area serves as a crucial rest stop for migratory birds during their long journeys across continents. Birdwatchers come here to observe rare species found in only a few places worldwide.
