Chongming District, Administrative district at the Yangtze River mouth, Shanghai, China
Chongming District is an administrative division at the Yangtze River mouth in Shanghai, made up of three alluvial islands. The islands—Chongming, Changxing, and Hengsha—form the northernmost part of the city and are connected by tunnel and bridge infrastructure.
The territory formed from two separate sandbars during the Tang Dynasty, with settlement beginning around 705 AD. The area later became organized as a prefecture under Kublai Khan's rule.
The district maintains its agricultural heritage through modern green farming practices while transforming into an ecological development zone with technology parks and marine industries.
The district connects to the mainland through the Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel and Chongqi Bridge, making access straightforward from both directions. Visitors should plan routes carefully since reaching different parts of the islands requires knowing which connection works best for each destination.
This area contains the world's largest estuarine alluvial island system with deep water channels capable of handling large cargo vessels. This natural advantage has made it a key industrial and port location that continues to draw modern development and shipping activity.
