Grass Island, Island destination in Tai Po District, Hong Kong.

Grass Island is a 1.69 square kilometer island featuring rolling grassy slopes, coastal walking paths, and open hilltops with views across the Tolo Channel waters. The landscape offers several walking routes and a few temples that sit at different points across the terrain.

The island was a fishing hub in the 1700s, leading to the establishment of temples and a population of around 2,000 residents at its peak. This period shaped how the settlement developed and what remains visible on the land today.

The Tin Hau Temple serves as a gathering place where locals mark important festivals and religious occasions with community celebrations. These temples shape how people on the island mark their calendar and connect with each other throughout the year.

Ferries connect the island to mainland piers, with more frequent service on weekends and return trips departing before sunset. It helps to arrive early and keep track of return schedules so you have enough time to explore the hiking trails and visit the temples.

The island has a hilltop camping area where visitors can spend the night and watch sunrise and sunset over the water. This spot lets you experience how the temperature shifts from day into night while staying close to the shoreline.
