Zhaozhou Bridge, Stone arch bridge in Hebei, China
The Zhaozhou Bridge spans 50 meters across the Xiao River with a central arch and four smaller arches on both sides of the structure.
Built in 605 CE during the Sui Dynasty by master architect Li Chun, this bridge represents the earliest implementation of an open-spandrel arch design.
The bridge features intricate stone carvings of dragons and mythological creatures along its railings, reflecting traditional Chinese artistry and craftsmanship.
The bridge maintains its function as a crossing point over the Xiao River, supporting pedestrian traffic while demonstrating exceptional flood resistance capabilities.
The engineering design includes four smaller arches that reduce water pressure during floods and decrease the overall weight of the structure.
