Guangzhou Metro, Rapid transit system in Guangzhou, China
The Guangzhou Metro is a rapid transit network serving the metropolitan region of Guangdong Province with multiple lines and hundreds of stations. The routes run both underground and on elevated tracks through urban and suburban districts, linking residential neighborhoods with business centers and transport hubs.
Construction of the first line began in December 1993, and the initial section opened in June 1997. Over the following decades, the network grew steadily with new lines and extensions that kept pace with the expanding city.
Many downtown stations carry names that reference old trading quarters and neighborhoods known for specific crafts or markets. The system serves as a daily link for residents heading to work, school, or temples scattered throughout the city.
Trains run from roughly six in the morning until midnight, with ticket costs calculated by the distance you cover. Most stations have elevators and escalators, making it easier to enter and exit with luggage or strollers.
The Guangfo Line has linked Guangzhou with the neighboring city of Foshan since 2010, marking China's first intercity metro connection. This route shows how the region is weaving its urban areas together and simplifying commutes between two major cities.
