Hotan County

The county extends between the Taklamakan Desert and Kunlun Mountains, containing multiple townships near oases in southwestern Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The region transformed from the ancient Sanskrit name Godana to its current designation through various cultural influences, becoming an official county in January 1913.

The population of 342,603 residents consists of 99 percent Uyghur people who maintain traditional practices near desert oases and mountain territories.

China National Highway 315 and China National Highway 219 provide essential transportation routes through the county, connecting multiple settlements across the region.

The county administers sections of Aksai Chin, including significant water bodies such as Aksai Chin Lake and Surigh Yilganing Kol in disputed territories.
