Danzhou, city in the northwest of the Chinese island province of Hainan
Danzhou is a prefecture-level city in the northwest of Hainan Island, making it the largest city on the island by area. It sits along the Beibu Gulf coast and is shaped by broad roads, open land, and a mix of urban blocks and rural countryside.
The city was established around 110 BC, which makes it one of the earliest settlements on Hainan. Over the centuries it grew from a small coastal community into a regional administrative center.
Danzhou is known across China as a center of folk poetry, and locals perform dialect verses called Danzhou Ge at festivals and community gatherings. Visitors walking through the city can often hear singing groups in open squares or markets, which gives daily life a distinctly communal rhythm.
The city is easy to get around by bicycle or on foot since roads are open and traffic is generally light. To see the coast and the surrounding countryside properly, it is worth setting aside more than one day.
Danzhou received the designation of National Garden City from China in 2017, recognizing the large share of forest and green land that sits directly alongside its urban areas. This level of tree cover within a large city is uncommon by Chinese standards.
