Yangpu Ancient Salt Field

Yangpu Ancient Salt Field, Archaeological salt production site in Yangpu Peninsula, China.

Yangpu Ancient Salt Field is an archaeological site featuring over 1,000 flat stone tanks arranged along the beach. These basins were specifically designed to convert seawater into salt through natural evaporation.

The site was established around 800 AD by salt workers from Putian in Fujian Province. They developed a unique method that used sea mud and sunlight to extract salt.

The salt-making methods here reflect the identity of the local families who have maintained this practice across generations. You can see this knowledge still active in the daily work along the shore.

The site is most active during summer and autumn months, when around 30 families practice the traditional production methods. These seasons offer the best opportunity to observe the salt-making processes in action.

Each stone tank has a thin rim that captures seawater during high tide, letting natural evaporation create salt. This simple yet clever design allowed workers to operate without artificial technology.
