Zhongnanshan Tunnel, Road tunnel in Shaanxi Province, China.
The Zhongnanshan Tunnel is a road passage that cuts through the Qinling Mountains, linking Xi'an and Ankang across the mountain range. The structure consists of two parallel tubes designed to handle traffic in both directions through this major geographical barrier.
Work on this road passage started in 2002 with four major Chinese construction companies joining forces to tackle the mountain crossing. The completed tunnel opened to traffic after several years of construction, fundamentally changing travel patterns in the region.
The tunnel connects the economic regions of the Yellow River belt with the Yangtze River delta, fostering commerce between northern and southern China.
Travel speed through this passage is limited to 80 kilometers per hour, reducing the journey between the two regions from about three hours to less than one hour. Both directions have multiple lanes to maintain steady traffic flow.
At its deepest point, this tunnel descends more than 1,600 meters below the surface, making it one of the deepest road passages in its class. The interior features special ceiling lighting that changes color to help keep drivers alert during long passages.
