Zhelin Reservoir, lake
Zhelin Reservoir is a large body of water in Jiangxi province, situated between several counties and spanning one of the widest water surfaces in the region. It contains many islands and reaches an average depth of about 45 meters (150 feet), while an earth-filled dam holds back the water and serves both hydroelectric generation and water supply for surrounding communities.
The reservoir was built to supply water to local communities and support agriculture, with a massive earth-filled dam constructed to also generate hydroelectric power. The dam's completion reshaped the landscape significantly and subsequently led scientists to study increased seismic activity in the area caused by the weight of water on the earth below.
The reservoir is known locally as Mount Lu West Sea, a name that connects it to the nearby mountain and reflects how residents see it as part of their natural world. Fishing and farming remain central to daily life here, with people visiting regularly to work or spend time by the water in ways that have continued for generations.
