Shanghai Hongqiao railway station, railway station
Shanghai Hongqiao is a major railway station in Minhang and Changning districts connecting high-speed trains to cities like Beijing, Wuhan, Chengdu, and Kunming. The building has four floors above ground and one underground level, with the underground floor used for arrivals and departures, the first floor housing ticket counters and waiting areas, and upper floors containing shops and services.
The station opened in July 2010 and has grown into one of China's largest railway hubs, handling thousands of passengers daily. Its construction was part of Shanghai's modernization drive and has been continuously expanded since then to support the growing transport network between the city and other regions.
The station takes its name from Hongqiao, meaning Rainbow Bridge, reflecting Shanghai's modern identity. Visitors see thousands of people from different parts of China moving through the wide halls daily, creating a cosmopolitan feeling with clear signs in Chinese and English throughout the space.
Visitors can reach the station easily by subway on three different lines, or by bus and taxi services available nearby. It is advisable to arrive at least one hour before train departure, especially during peak times, to allow enough time for ticket purchase, security screening, and finding the correct platform.
The station features special ticket counters for travelers from abroad, as automatic machines cannot read foreign passports, making ticket purchase significantly easier for international visitors. Additionally, intelligent machines throughout the building allow online flight check-in and train ticket management in one convenient location.
