Chonghai Bridge, Transportation bridge at Yangtze River mouth, China
Chonghai Bridge is a transportation crossing that spans the northern distributary of the Yangtze River and connects Shanghai to Jiangsu Province by way of Chongming Island. The structure stretches approximately 1.8 kilometers and integrates with regional expressway networks to facilitate movement between these areas.
Planning for this crossing began in 2003 when Jiangsu Provincial authorities identified it as a key component for regional river development. After roughly 13 years of technical feasibility studies, a design was developed that incorporates specialized solutions for spanning one of the widest sections of the Yangtze delta.
The bridge represents a continuation of China's engineering traditions in constructing large-scale river crossings that connect communities and facilitate regional development.
The bridge sits about 1.7 kilometers (1 mile) east of Niupeng Port and roughly 600 meters (2,000 feet) west of Qinglong Port, connecting to major expressways in the region. Visitors should know this is a lengthy transportation route best accessed by vehicle, offering views of the river delta from the crossing.
After thirteen years of technical feasibility studies, the bridge design incorporates solutions for spanning one of the widest sections of the Yangtze River delta.
