St. Francis Xavier Church

St. Francis Xavier Church features pointed arches and detailed Gothic architectural elements within its Neo-Baroque structure near the center of Shanghai.

The church opened in 1853 after Italian Jesuit Fr. Ludovico Maria Besi initiated its construction on compensated land following the rescinding of anti-Catholic edicts.

The building served as the seat of the vicar apostolic of Kiang-nan and later as the cathedral of Shanghai until significant political changes in 1960.

The church maintains regular mass schedules, religious education classes, and Eucharistic Adoration sessions for both local Catholics and international visitors.

During the Cultural Revolution, the church building functioned as a factory warehouse until 1982, when religious services gradually resumed in the restored spaces.
