Tung Chung West station, proposed MTR station
Tung Chung West station is an underground metro stop planned for Lantau Island in the Islands District. It will feature two levels with two exits near Yat Tung Estate and is designed to serve local residents with modern facilities.
The government first mentioned the station concept in 2009 but noted there was no clear plan at that time. In 2014 officials confirmed they wanted to develop the area, and construction began in mid-2023 after environmental approval in 2022.
The name Tung Chung West refers to the westward expansion of the existing Tung Chung town on Lantau Island. The station will serve as a new hub connecting residents of the surrounding housing blocks and supporting the growth of the local community.
The station is still under construction and will open in 2029, so access is not yet available. Visitors heading to the area can use the existing Tung Chung station or local bus services for now.
The station will become the westernmost stop on Hong Kong's MTR system once complete, taking this title from the airport station. Construction uses advanced tunnel boring machines and includes special ventilation systems to keep air fresh underground.
