Yuqiao Shuiku, Chinese reservoir
Yuqiao Shuiku is a large reservoir in Jizhou, Tianjin, stretching about 35 kilometers at its longest and covering roughly 135 square kilometers. It serves as the main water source for Tianjin and holds an average depth of 4.7 meters (15.4 feet) with a maximum depth just over 12 meters (39 feet).
The reservoir was constructed in the early 1980s to supply drinking water to Tianjin and manage flooding during heavy rains. It became part of the larger Luan River-Tianjin water transfer plan, which redirects water to keep the city's supply steady.
The reservoir is also known as Cuiping Lake and has become a quiet gathering place for the local community. Visitors walk along the banks, watch the water's calm surface, and residents depend on it for daily water needs and fishing activities.
The reservoir offers open pathways along the water perfect for quiet walks and enjoying fresh air in a spacious setting. The area is least crowded early in the morning and remains uncrowded throughout most days, making it accessible for a peaceful visit.
The reservoir faces water quality challenges because nutrients from bottom sediment release into the water, especially in summer, fueling algae growth. Local authorities are working on solutions like sediment removal and banning cage fish farming to improve and maintain water cleanliness.
