Tung Chung East station, proposed MTR station
Tung Chung East station is a new above-ground metro stop in the Islands District on Lantau Island. The station will feature two ground-level platforms and be designed with high ceilings and large windows to create an open, naturally lit space that connects to elevated walkways leading to surrounding development areas.
The station was proposed as part of the Tung Chung New Town Extension Study and received government approval in 2023. Construction began in May 2023 and is expected to be completed by 2029 to support growing transportation needs linked to new residential developments on Lantau Island.
Once completed, the station will be an above-ground facility with straightforward access to surrounding areas via pedestrian bridges. Be aware that the area is currently a construction site and the projected opening is not until 2029.
The station is being built on reclaimed land created from the sea, which presents unusual construction challenges and engineering solutions. This approach allows the island to expand with new residential areas while simultaneously improving transportation connectivity to the expanding community.
