Yonglongsha, Former island in Nantong, China
Yonglongsha is a landmass in the Yangtze River north of Nantong that extends roughly 16 kilometers from east to west. The area lies within the river channel and today consists of agricultural land and newer settlements.
The landmass first emerged during the Kangxi period in the early 1700s, then disappeared before reappearing in the 1900s. Natural processes of erosion and sediment deposition continuously reshaped the area.
Communities formed here relatively recently when the first residents arrived and began farming the land. Over time, people developed their own ways of living and traditions in this young region.
The location connects to surrounding areas through the Chongqi Bridge, allowing access to other parts of Jiangsu Province. Visitors should be aware this is a rural area with basic infrastructure and limited urban amenities.
The former river channel between this location and neighboring Chongming Island was converted into a modern irrigation canal. This waterway now serves the surrounding farmland and defines much of the local landscape.
