Leishenshan Hospital, hospital in China
Leishenshan Hospital is a large medical facility in Jiangxia District of Wuhan designed to accommodate roughly 1,600 beds using a modular layout of prefabricated units. The building features isolated wards with separate routes for patients and staff, along with controlled ventilation systems and equipment designed to prevent infection spread.
The hospital was built in a record 12 days starting in late January 2020 in response to a major disease outbreak, receiving its first patients in early February. The rapid construction demonstrated how modular design and coordinated teamwork could create a fully operational medical facility under extreme time pressure.
The name Leishenshan refers to the Thunder God from Chinese mythology, a symbol of protection and hope during the crisis. The hospital represents the city's collective determination to respond rapidly and decisively to a major health emergency.
The hospital is located near the Athletes Village and features clear pathways and signage for easy navigation. Visitors should note that spaces are strictly organized with separate zones for different functions and infection control measures in place throughout.
The building was designed using digital modeling techniques that allowed all systems to be tested virtually before construction began. This advanced planning helped prevent conflicts and ensure ventilation and water systems worked together seamlessly.
