Euskirchen, Administrative district in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
Euskirchen is a rural district in western North Rhine-Westphalia that stretches between the Cologne Bay and the forested hills of the Eifel. The territory includes eleven independent municipalities that range from open fields to densely wooded uplands.
The district formed in 1972 through the merger of two older administrative units during the municipal reorganization in North Rhine-Westphalia. Three years later one municipality left and formed its own district.
The administrative territory takes its name from the district seat and connects rural communities with smaller towns in the northern Eifel. Today regional characteristics show in agriculture and in the decentralized settlement pattern that shapes how people live and work across the area.
The administrative authority sits in the district seat of the same name and offers public services for the population across the region. Municipal offices spread across several locations and handle different concerns.
The area contains large beet fields that supply a sugar factory from the late 19th century. Production there has been running for more than 140 years and shapes the economic development of the surroundings.
