Bautzen District, Administrative district in eastern Saxony, Germany
Bautzen District is an administrative region in eastern Saxony that covers a substantial area and includes several important towns as its centers. The main settlements—Bautzen, Bischofswerda, Kamenz, Hoyerswerda, and Radeberg—serve as the district's key communities and economic hubs.
The district took its current form in 1994 when two former administrative areas merged to create the larger region we see today. Before that merger, the land had experienced centuries of changing rule between neighboring powers.
People in this region speak both German and Upper Sorbian, a Slavic language with its own traditions and community practices. You can see this bilingual character reflected in daily life and local customs.
The region is connected by public transportation networks linking the various towns throughout the area. Regular bus and train services make traveling between the main towns straightforward.
The Spree River flows through the territory from the southeast toward the north, shaping the landscape with its natural path. Southern parts are bordered by mountain ranges that define the region's edges.
