SIGN!, Office skyscraper in Düsseldorf Hafen, Germany.
SIGN! is a 76-metre office tower in Düsseldorf's Medienhafen, designed by Helmut Jahn and built between 2007 and 2010. It has 19 above-ground floors and about 14,000 m² of gross floor area. Its glass facade weighs 25 tonnes.
The building was completed in 2011 as part of the modern transformation of Düsseldorf's harbor that started in the early 2000s. Its completion marked an important shift in the area's development as a business center.
The tower carries the name SIGN!, written with an exclamation mark, and stands in the Medienhafen, the media harbour district where Düsseldorf concentrated its new office architecture. Its architect, Helmut Jahn, was born in Nuremberg and worked in Chicago. The 25-tonne glass facade is the element visitors notice first when walking along the harbour.
The building sits in the port's business district and is easily reached by public transportation. Its close proximity to harbor facilities and the waterfront makes it easy to explore the area.
The vertical lines of the facade create changing light patterns on the glass surfaces throughout the day. These effects emerge from shifting sunlight, which emphasizes the building's geometric form.
