South Aegean Region

The South Aegean region encompasses fifty inhabited islands across the Cyclades and Dodecanese groups, spanning 5,286 square kilometers of the Mediterranean Sea.

Following Greece's administrative reform of 1987, the region received official status, with subsequent modifications through the Kallikratis plan of 2010 establishing current governance structures.

The regional capital Ermoupolis on Syros Island maintains neoclassical buildings, the Apollon Theatre, and Miaouli Square, reflecting centuries of Mediterranean architectural traditions.

Direct flights connect major islands like Rhodes, Santorini, and Mykonos to European cities, while ferries link smaller islands throughout the transportation network.

The region achieved a GDP of 5.976 billion euros in 2021, earning the second-highest per capita economic output among Greek administrative divisions.
