The region evolved through multiple administrative reforms, with the most significant change occurring in 2010 when the Kallikratis plan restructured its territorial organization.

Each island maintains specific traditions in food production, from Lesbos's olive oil to Chios's masticha cultivation and Samos's wine making methods.

The region connects to mainland Greece through regular ferry services departing from Piraeus port and flights operating from Athens International Airport.

The North Aegean administration manages a territory of 3,838 square kilometers spread across multiple islands, with Mytilene serving as its capital.
