Thessaloniki Regional Unit

The Thessaloniki Regional Unit is an administrative area in northern Greece that spans from the Thermaic Gulf to the Strymonic Gulf. It comprises fourteen municipalities surrounding and extending beyond the city of Thessaloniki.

This territory became part of Greece in 1913 following the First Balkan War, when the kingdom acquired Thessaloniki from the Ottoman Empire. The current administrative structure took shape through subsequent national reforms.

The regional unit contains fourteen municipalities, each maintaining local traditions while operating under a unified administrative framework established by national reforms.

The region connects efficiently to major roadways through motorways A1/E75 and A2/E90, enabling smooth travel within Greece and to neighboring countries. Being centered around Thessaloniki makes it easily accessible for most visitors.

The territory includes two important lakes, Koroneia and Volvi, which shape the character of the eastern lowlands. These water bodies create peaceful spaces within the region's agricultural landscape.
