Lasithi Regional Unit, Administrative region in eastern Crete, Greece
This administrative region covers eastern Crete and encompasses mountain ranges as well as flat plains with varied landscapes. It consists of four municipalities - Oropedio Lasithiou, Agios Nikolaos, Ierapetra, and Siteia - each with its own settlement centers.
The area was a center of Minoan civilization with important archaeological finds scattered across several ancient settlements. These early sites show the long history of human settlement in this part of Crete.
Four municipalities shape this region, each with their own traditions and local festivals celebrated throughout the year. Visitors can encounter traditional crafts and regional foods that reflect the character of different communities.
The region is best explored by car, as the different towns are connected by main roads across varied terrain. Coastal towns offer more services than inland mountain areas.
A striking feature is the Lasithi Plateau at high elevation, where hundreds of white windmills dot the landscape and pump water for farming. This distinctive sight with mills arranged across fields is something many travelers overlook.
