Promenade des Anglais, Seaside promenade in Nice, France
Promenade des Anglais is a seven kilometer path along the Mediterranean coast with a broad walkway and cycling lanes beside the Bay of Angels. The strip runs between the beach and the street front of the city and gives access to public and private beach sections.
English aristocrats funded construction of the path in 1820 to provide work for locals during a hard winter. The originally narrow route was later widened and extended several times.
The coastal path keeps its name from the English residents who funded it and shows a lively city life with walkers, runners and cyclists. The blue metal chairs invite rest and mark the image of the seafront.
Numerous access points connect the path with beaches, restaurants and hotels along the entire route. Regular bus lines run between both ends of the promenade and make movement easier.
The blue chairs have stood along the path since 1948 and replaced earlier wicker seats. They became a mark of the seafront and are regularly renewed to this day.
