The House of the Writers is a literary organization based in a mansion in Tbilissi's Sololaki district that combines art nouveau and neobaroque architectural styles. The building displays decorative stone work on its exterior and features traditional Georgian wooden designs throughout its interior spaces.
German architect Karl Zaar designed and constructed this building between 1903 and 1905 for David Sarajishvili, who founded the first brandy factory in Georgia. After the founding of the Soviet republic in 1921, the building became the home of the writers' organization.
The house became a meeting place for Georgian writers after 1921 and hosted many important cultural events over the years. You can still sense the atmosphere of creative exchange that shaped Georgian literary life within these walls.
The building is located in the Sololaki district and visitors can enter by ringing the bell at the main door. Weekday visits tend to work best for those hoping to explore the interior and meet with staff members.
The terrace features a mosaic made with Villeroy and Boch tiles that adds an elegant touch to the exterior space. The intricate woodwork throughout the interior was carefully crafted by Georgian artisan Ilia Mamatsashvili.
