Sikar, Regional center in Shekhawati, Rajasthan, India.
Sikar is a regional town in Sikar district in northeastern Rajasthan, surrounded by a town wall with seven stone gates. The old town spreads around several market squares, while newer residential areas and educational institutions shape the outer zones.
Rao Daulat Singh founded the place in 1687 as a major residence within the state of Jaipur. The original name Veer Bhan Ka Bas was later replaced by the current name, which refers to the strategic location.
The name of the town means "head of a lion" and refers to its role as a gateway to the Shekhawati region, known for painted merchant houses. Wall paintings in courtyards show scenes from daily life and mythological stories that visitors can discover in the older quarters.
Trains connect the town regularly with Delhi, Jaipur and Bikaner, with the nearest airport located in Jaipur. Auto-rickshaws and local buses make it easy to move within the town and to surrounding villages.
The town has grown into a center for exam preparation, with numerous institutes for aspiring engineers and doctors. Thousands of students from across Rajasthan come here to prepare for nationwide entrance exams.
