Red Fort, Historic fort in Central Delhi, India
Covering 254 acres (103 hectares), the complex features red sandstone walls rising 33 meters (108 feet) with structures including public and private audience halls, pavilions set in gardens with water channels, a bazaar arcade, and museums housing Mughal artifacts.
Emperor Shah Jahan ordered construction in 1638 when transferring the Mughal capital from Agra to Delhi, completing the fortified palace compound a decade later, which served as the residence of Mughal rulers until 1857 when the British seized it following the rebellion.
Serving as the venue where India's Prime Minister addresses the nation each August 15th, this location symbolizes independence from British colonial rule and draws millions of observers annually.
Open Tuesday through Sunday from sunrise to sunset, admission costs 35 rupees for Indian nationals and 500 rupees for international visitors, with additional fees required for specific museums within the compound.
The Khas Mahal chambers contain elaborate pietra dura inlay work using semi-precious stones arranged in floral patterns, while an underground passage once connected to the Yamuna River for royal boat excursions.
