Dandeli, Forest town in Uttara Kannada, India
Dandeli sits along the Kali River at 472 meters elevation, surrounded by dense forests of the Western Ghats in Karnataka. The settlement spreads along the riverbank and forms a gateway to the wooded hills that enclose the entire valley.
The settlement grew from a small forest community of 515 residents in 1930 to an industrial center after the founding of paper mills. This shift changed the economy and drew workers from other parts of Karnataka into the region.
The town takes its name from the god Dandelappa, whose temple still serves residents for religious ceremonies today. Worship of this local deity shapes daily life and draws believers from surrounding villages.
Temperatures range from 18 degrees Celsius in winter to 27 degrees Celsius in summer, with heavy rains between August and November. Visitors should bring light clothing for the day and a jacket for cooler evenings, especially during the monsoon season.
The wildlife sanctuary hosts 270 bird species and serves as protected habitat for tigers, leopards, and elephants in natural surroundings. Visitors can observe these animals during guided safaris or walks through the reserve, especially in the early morning hours.
