Gulmarg, Ski resort in Kashmir, India
Gulmarg is a mountain village in the Himalayas at 2690 meters elevation in the Kashmir region of India. The village sits in a natural bowl surrounded by forested slopes and open meadows, with a gondola system carrying visitors up to 3980 meters.
British officials discovered this spot in the mid-19th century and used it as a summer retreat during hot months. After India gained independence, skiing facilities began developing here in the 1950s and the gondola system was expanded later in the early 21st century.
The name translates as "meadow of flowers" in the local language, reflecting what visitors see during spring when wildflowers cover slopes between snow patches. People gather at the base village for noon kahwa tea breaks between ski runs.
Warm layered clothing is necessary throughout the winter season as temperatures often drop below freezing. Visitors should adjust to the altitude and climb slowly, especially when reaching the upper gondola stations.
A small 14th-century Hindu temple stands in the middle of the village and remains open throughout the year even when snow covers surrounding roads. The temple serves as a landmark for skiers returning to the village after day trips.
