Kargil district, Administrative district in Ladakh, India
The Kargil district spans across high mountain ranges and deep valleys, situated at an elevation of 2,676 meters along the Suru River.
The district gained prominence during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947 and later became a separate administrative entity in 1979 after separation from Leh district.
The population of Kargil district includes Shia Muslims forming the majority, while Buddhists maintain a strong presence in the Zanskar region.
National Highway 1D connects the district to Srinagar and Ladakh, though winter snowfall frequently affects transportation from November through March.
The district contains three distinct historical regions - Purig, Dras, and Zanskar, each maintaining their individual cultural and linguistic characteristics.
