Solan is a city in Solan district, Himachal Pradesh, India, spread across several ridges in the Shivalik range. Red corrugated roofs and ochre buildings climb the slopes, while Mount Karol peak defines the northern skyline.
The area once belonged to several small princely states that merged into a single administrative unit after Indian independence. The transformation into a separate district took place in the early seventies of the twentieth century, bringing new government offices and departments to the region.
The town takes its name from the goddess Shoolini Devi, whose temple sits on a hill above the streets. Families visit the shrine before important occasions and light oil lamps in the courtyard, while devotees tie red cloths to the iron fence.
Temperatures stay mostly mild, so light jackets for cooler evenings and early mornings are enough. Orientation is easy since the main road called Mall Road runs through the center and shops and restaurants line this route.
The Directorate of Mushroom Research in Chambaghat cultivates and studies numerous fungus varieties, earning the city the unofficial title Mushroom City. Visitors can occasionally buy fresh button mushrooms and oyster mushrooms at roadside stands that come directly from nearby cultivation farms.
