Ladakh Lok Sabha constituency, Parliamentary constituency in Ladakh, India
The Ladakh Lok Sabha constituency covers the districts of Leh and Kargil in the northern Himalayas. The region stretches across high-altitude valleys, mountain passes, and remote village communities separated by difficult terrain.
The electoral district was established as a parliamentary constituency in 1967. It became the sole parliamentary seat of the Union Territory when Ladakh separated from Jammu and Kashmir in 2019.
The constituency encompasses Buddhist, Muslim, and Hindu communities living in traditional settlements with their own religious buildings and gathering spaces. Walking through the region reveals how these different groups maintain their separate customs while sharing the same mountain landscape.
Polling stations are located at extreme elevations up to 4,500 meters (14,750 feet), where voters must deal with challenging weather conditions. The remote locations make visits demanding, especially during winter months when mountain passes often become impassable.
This is India's largest electoral district by land area, stretching from the Karakoram to the Himalayas. The enormous distances between voting locations during elections present logistical challenges that rank among the most difficult conditions in the country.
