Adimali, Town in Idukki district
Adimali is a small town in the Western Ghats of Kerala situated in a mountainous area with green forests and agricultural plantations. The town sits on National Highway 85 with narrow streets lined with small shops selling spices, tea, and souvenirs, surrounded by waterfalls such as Cheeyappara and Valara and rivers flowing through the hills.
Adimali was originally home to tribal groups who lived in the forest, fishing, gathering herbs, and farming small plots of land. During the 20th century, people from other parts of Kerala moved to the area to establish farms and build new settlements, leading to the development of tea and spice plantations.
Adimali reflects the daily rhythms of farming communities who celebrate festivals with music, dance, and food throughout the year. Local temples and churches gather residents for prayers and celebrations, while traditional crafts and knowledge passed through songs and stories keep cultural practices alive in the forest regions around the town.
Adimali is accessible throughout the year and requires no entrance fees, making it easy for visitors to explore the town freely. Buses and taxis are readily available within the town, and the best time to visit is March through November when the weather is pleasant and the landscape remains lush and green.
The Muthirapuzha River flows through Adimali with several dams that irrigate farms and generate electricity for the region. Rare animals like the Nilgiri Tahr, a mountain goat species, inhabit the nearby forests and Eravikulam National Park, which many visitors seek out to observe wildlife.
